I think we can agree that originality is (usually) a good thing. Someone commented on the Quora post, “the trick is to steal from enough different sources as you can [...] the most original artists are the ones who steal from obscure sources.”
Someone else humorously admitted, “my best work is my least original.”
So, do you find it hard to be original? Being truly original takes more than a spark of inspiration, it takes phenomenal confidence to believe in an idea or a sound that didn't exist before. Pharrell Williams says that he "looks for ideas in the oblivion", meaning a place where nothing exists.
this blog, the Bee Gee's created their falsetto style of singing as a way to differentiate themselves from other groups and sound original.
We all want to write music that connects with people so maybe being original is too much of a gamble. Sticking to music that adheres to certain rules or trends certainly ensures people will understand our music.
