Of course, if you mix any of these two elements with a great voice, looks, performance etc then we have something magical, BUT a great voice alone is never enough.
99% of musicians (especially singers) fail to work on the two most important things;
- finding great songs
- developing a unique sound
The Bee Gee's once said in an interview once that their falsetto style of singing was "created" as a way to differentiate themselves from other groups. It's not their natural singing style at all, they had to create something to make themselves stand out. They could have practised singing forever, but without a unique selling point (and great songs) they would not be famous.
Think of any of your favourite artists and you'll soon see that it is either a great song or unique and original style that has put them in the limelight.
Singers nowadays are experts at finding good producers, but how many do you know who scout songwriters? Madonna knew early in her career that it was the song that would make her famous, alone with her unique look. Neither her voice or the music production alone would have made an impact.
Next time you practice technique, put aside some time to think about how to find great songs and how to be different. Whether you are a singer, bass player, coffee shop owner or a politician, the world craves originality. Remember to "do you" because no one can do that quite as good as you can!
